About lead swimming instructor Maury McKinney
I love to swim. I have been swimming for nearly my entire life. I hope to become a very old swimmer. I enjoy sharing my experience and enthusiasm for swimming and water safety. It’s marvelous to watch the process of learning to swim and the positive affects it can have on children’s self-confidence and motivation.
Aquatic education and recreation are important for the safety and well being of most people. Good beginnings make for good middles and good ends. If you learn to swim correctly at a young age the process makes for safer swimmers that are able to recognize and enjoy the many lifelong benefits that swimming offers.
My goal is to foster a simple and long-lasting joy for movement in the water by developing safe, beautiful, slippery swimmers. The safety component addresses the many skills a swimmer needs to make good decisions while in or on the water. Beautiful and slippery are parts of the art of swimming that reflect one’s sense of freedom and peace in the aquatic environment.
Besides teaching swimming I also compete in many regional Masters events. I have achieved age group national rankings in the pool and good success in some well known open-water events in lakes and ocean. I’d like to think I can continue to improve and look forward to competing in the years ahead just for the fun of it. Last fall I swam 21 miles across Lake Winnipesaukee in 12.5 hours. From Center Harbor to Alton Bay. I learned an awful lot about swimming that day. All of my own swimming simply fuels my passion for becoming a better swimmer, swim instructor and coach.
I am certified through the American Red Cross as a Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard. I have been teaching swim lessons at Cranmore for a year and a half and look forward to teaching here for many more. Other certifications include Wilderness First Responder (WFR from SOLO) and Rock Instructor through the American Mountain Guides Association. I am looking to earn aquatic teaching and swim coaching certifications in the near future.
I have lived in the Mount Washington Valley since 1986 and think it must be one of the best places to live on the planet. I am married and have one daughter, age 10. I like swimming, climbing, trail running, xc skiing, reading and photography. My biggest project currently is developing the Saco Valley Swim Team, a local youth swim team.
If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions about our swim lessons come on down to the pool and talk to me or get in touch with the folks at the front desk. Get safe, Get fit. Have fun.
